Benjamin Butler
Pinecones
Klaus von Nichtssagend presents an online viewing room of works by Benjamin Butler in conjunction with his show Pinecones, on view through March 30, 2024. For this show, Butler developed twelve paintings, each the same scale, using the image and structure of a pinecone as starting points.

Few representational painters have managed to rid themselves of quite so much representation and still make pictures.

Mr. Butler has narrowed his focus even further, to thrillingly psychedelic effect: His work now seems balanced on a razor blade between Conceptual practice and “The Starry Night,” but at the same time, somehow, it has ample room to move.

Take [Butler] as an abstractionist or as a representationalist, his art is good either way. Whether you see him as a detached and canny commentator on art history and the vicissitudes of its styles and conventions or as an almost naïve sensualist intoxicated with the fluidity of paint and the beauty of color, the work proves you right.
