Ludlow/Leipzig

June 26 - August 8, 2020

Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery is very pleased to reopen its space with Ludlow/Leipzig, a two-person show of new works by Vienna-based American painter Benjamin Butler and Leipzig painter Bastian Muhr on June 26th, 2020. The show consists of a new series of oil paintings on paper by Muhr, and recently completed monochromatic multi-canvas paintings by Butler.

Ludlow/Leipzig is the occasion for Muhr’s first show in New York, exhibiting works made while on a 2020 residency at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut. American-born Butler has been represented by Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery since 2012, the year he relocated from New York to Vienna, Austria.

The ongoing cross-national conversation between Butler and Muhr connects back to German expatriates, the Alberses, who came to the US in the 1940s and established themselves as influential teachers as well as artists. Additionally the artists have been continuing a dialogue about making work influenced by the aesthetics of minimalism but with an emphasis on craft and the hand.

A coinciding exhibition of work by the two artists will take place in Leipzig at Galerie Jochen Hempel, in August, 2020.
