Set against a metropolitan landscape created from cardboard boxes, “Duets” is a performance that features two people exploring their relationship while also attempting to maintain their individual identities. The piece begins with two performers on opposite sides of the stage. Each speaks in turn, doing so through monologue or poetry, but a dialogue between the two slowly emerges. A relationship forms, but the performers speak and dance with varying levels of success at communicating with one another. Throughout, the two performers change into various guises and costumes, reflecting different emotional states as they navigate through the city. The sets, props, and costumes are reminiscent of community theater: cardboard boxes and twinkling nightlights for the set, and costumes fashioned out of ballet tights and bathmats. The tone flips between silly and melancholic, reminiscent of children’s theater and 1960s movies such as Breakfast of Tiffany and West Side Story.
