Kemar Keanu Wynter

The Armory Show - Focus Section

September 24 - September 28, 2026

Seven Year

Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery is pleased to present a solo booth of works by Brooklyn-based artist Kemar Keanu Wynter as part of the Focus section of The Armory Show 2026.

Focus, curated by Maria Elena Ortiz of the Modern Art Museum Fort Worth, features artist presentations exploring how the Caribbean has long served as a nexus for diverse communities and a foundation for contemporary artistic discourse.

Cuisine and communion sit firmly at the foundation of Wynter’s abstractions. Through the translation of palate to palette, he continues to build a visual Patois–a body of work through which he triangulates himselft between the West Indies, New York and the innumerable cultures and cuisines yet encountered. This solo presentation, dubbed Seven Year, treats the barrel-aging of rum as a metaphor for the evolution and maturation of Wynter’s practice since 2020. Pulled from the artist’s personal archives for this occasion, Klaus von Nichtssagend will present a previously unseen suite of works from his ZZ series (2020) hanging alongside his ongoing series titled Rücken- (2024–), large scale soaked and stained paintings.  These works are in conversation with those by color field artists like Sam Gilliam and romantics like Caspar David Friedrich. Also in play are the chromatic sensibilities of the Hudson River School, whose luminous palettes echo those Wynter witnessed during daily minglings with the rich and colorful Caribbean storefronts and eateries lining the streets intersecting Crown Heights.
