Art in America: The Weekly Lookout

April 2014

Ian Pedigo’s “Cosmopolitan Sleep Positions” evokes the logic of a natural history museum. The Alaska-born, New York-based artist’s sculptures resemble artifacts that have been reconstructed on custom plinths or placed in cabinets. While the fragments on view within these structures are familiar, the presentation makes them strange. Plastic bowls become anthropomorphic totems, and parts of a wooden chair are staged with feathers and pinecones like some kind of ritual vessel. Pedigo seems less interested in building autonomous objects than in exploring a system of display, and here it is possible to imagine an exhibition staged by scholars of another era straining to make sense of the 21st century.
